Janice Chessman, 90, of Gays Mills, died Friday, March 24, 2017. Janice Chessman, 90, of Gays Mills, WI, passed peacefully March 24, 2017 in Viroqua, Wi. Janice was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 15, 1927 to Emanuel and Helen (Kuschel) Welandt. She attended school in Detroit and went on to Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois to study nursing. Janice met her husband Roger Chessman at Elmhurst. They married on March 20, 1948 and moved to Itasca, IL where they made their home until they retired and moved to Gays Mills, WI in 1995. Janice worked in the travel industry as a tariff specialist for OAG. She enjoyed the company of her children and grandchildren and her dogs, many rescued and all of them cherished. Roger and Janice enjoyed traveling in their earlier years. After they moved to Gays Mills they lived peacefully on their beloved property enjoying the wildlife, birds and the beauty of the area, which they never grew tired of. Janice earned her paralegal degree in 1999 and worked for a short period of time in Lancaster for the State of Wisconsin Public Defenders office. Janice is survived by: Roger, her husband of 69 years; three children: Susan Detterbeck, Nancy Mink, and James (Kathy) Chessman; five grandchildren: Zachary Detterbeck & Jen, Joshua Detterbeck & Katelyn, Jasmin (Chris) Blake, Arielle Huxley, Adriena Chessman and three great-grandchildren: Amelia-Sky, Christopher and Bella Janice will be dearly missed by her family and the many people who have touched her life.
