Jarid Steven Schmidt, 28, died on December 2, 2013 at his home in Stoddard. Jarid Steven Schmidt, 28, took his life on December 2, 2013 at his home in Stoddard. Jarid was born on April 25, 1985 to Linda Smith and Richard Schmidt. He graduated from De Soto High School in 2003. He had several hobbies in life but his passion was fishing and hunting. Jarid started going along trout fishing just after he learned to walk. At a young age, with weeds way past his head, he walked the creek banks and learned where the good holes were and how to work them. It wasn't long and he took to hooking a trout like a natural. Jarid had several of his trophy catches mounted, and he enjoyed telling the story that went with each one. He enjoyed squirrel hunting, duck hunting and had many racks on the wall (with a story for each) that showed his love for deer hunting. Jarid was pretty proud of the buck he took with his bow this past season. At fifteen Jarid had an accident when jumping his dirt bike. The accident stretched his spinal cord which left him paralyzed from the chest down. This accident confined him to a wheelchair, but it didnt confine his spirit. Jarid continued to fish and hunt and put more trophies on the wall; his family and friends loved hearing about each one. Jarid spent a lot of time making jerky, sausage, smoking trout, and pickling fish; he also enjoyed growing his own jalapenos and pickling them. Jarid met many interesting people while casting a line off the dock and shooting pool at the Turtle in Stoddard; he enjoyed their stories and company. Jarid looked forward to getting his classic 68 Mustang out each spring. He always said it gave him a feeling he couldn't describe when he was driving it. He was a life time member of the Chaseburg Rod and Gun club. Jarid is survived by his parents, a brother, Brad Schmidt of Hudson, WI, a sister, Carrie Elsbernd of Clinton, IA. His maternal grandmother, Jeanette Smith, of Genoa. His Uncles and Aunts: Barb (Ron) De Line, Rockford, IL; Charles Smith, Rockford, IL; Jerry (Therese) Smith, La Crosse; Dale (Lee) Smith, St Joseph's Ridge; Yvonne Ellefson, Hawkeye, IA; Jim (Shirley) Smith, Sparta; Patty (Dwight) Veglahn of Genoa; Jess (Roman) Kamrowski of Brice Prairie; Ronald (Eileen) Schmidt, Holmen; Cindy Schmidt and Sue Schmidt, La Crosse; Carl Schmidt, Viroqua. Jarid has many cousins and many wonderful friends, Paul Hammes, Bradley and David Marsh, Matt Nelson, Jerry Ender, and Ambrose, to name a few. Jarid was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Frank Smith, paternal grandparents, Arletta and Raymond Schmidt. Graveside Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at the Bad Axe German Cemetery, rural Victory. Guests are welcomed to wear their camo in honor of Jarids memory. The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Homes of De Soto & Viroqua are assisting the family.
