Listen to Obituary

The matriarch of our family, Jean Frances Kirby, age 86, of De Soto, passed away peacefully at Gundersen Health on Thursday, August 7, 2025, with her family by her side. She was born on September 11, 1938, to Raymond and Opal (Robbins) Boardman in the village of De Soto. On November 24, 1956, she married the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Kirby. Together they raised 6 beautiful children Jeannie, James, Kimberly, Robin, Robert Jr. and Raymond. Bob and Jean shared 40 wonderful years together until his passing in 1997.

Jean dedicated 25 years of service to Northern Engraving, where her hard work and loyalty were unmatched. After retirement, she joined her friend Terry at Bluffview Greenhouse in De Soto, during that time she was able to build her own greenhouse — a true labor of love. Many happy hours were spent tending to her flowers, a passion that brought her joy and beauty to all who knew her.

Jean’s talents and energy extended far beyond gardening. Over the years, she worked as a waitress, cook, and bartender, always with a smile and a knack for making people feel welcome. She was a proud member of the VFW Auxiliary. Jean was an avid reader, she loved playing euchre, crocheting, embroidery, and delighting in the magic of Christmas lights. Her cooking was legendary, and she cherished every opportunity to gather family and friends around her table.

She is survived by her daughters Kim Schmitz and Robin Ann Gage, her son, R.D. (Lisa) Kirby; brothers, James (Andrea) Boardman, John (Theresa) Boardman, Jerry (Kathy) Boardman, and Jody Boardman; sisters, Judy (Theron) Wilson and Jenny Cooper; son-in-law, Denny Boardman; daughter-in-law, Shirley Kirby; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. She also leaves behind her beloved dog, Lilly.

She was preceded in death by her sons, James “Jim” Kirby and Robert Jr. “Bobby” Kirby; daughter, Jeannie Lee Boardman; and honorary son-in-law, Al Paggi.

Jean was the first of her beloved siblings, affectionately known as “The 7 J's,” to be called home. Her memory will forever be treasured by those who loved her.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home. A visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until the time of service. Jean will be laid to rest in the De Soto Cemetery, with Chaplain Asha Boardman officiating. Online condolences may be offered at vossfh.com.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Benedictine Manor and Gundersen Health System for the exceptional care and kindness shown to Jean during her time there.
