June 24, 1924 — January 16, 2017

WESTBY / VIROQUA Jean Elizabeth Peterson Died on January 16, 2017. Jean was born in Ipswich, SD on June 24, 1924 to Willard and Linda (Mortenson) Hoilien. They returned to the Coulee Region in 1929, farming in Star Valley, and later at the Three Chimney's Farm in Vernon County. Jean graduated from the Soldiers Grove High School in 1942. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and flag carrier during patriotic parades. She worked for the Viroqua Schools as a cook and the Vernon Memorial Hospital as a dietary aide. A lot of her life was spent as a homemaker, and was known to make the best lefse. Mom was especially proud of her Norwegian Heritage having traveled to Norway two times and finding the birthplace of her descendants in Gudbransdsdal. She belonged to the Sons of Norway. Singing brought her great joy and she belonged to many choral groups over the years. Mom had a passion for home decorating, moving furniture at will and determining the next color to paint, or wall to paper to her families constant amazement. She enjoyed her family very much and loved her grandchildren. Jean is survived by her son, Ronald (Pat) Johnson, daughter, Carol Peterson, and son, Chuck (Julie) Peterson, and son-in-law, Arnold Erickson. Her grandchildren: Keith (Dawn) Erickson, Karl Erickson, Brenda (Jesse) Ray, Brett Ostrem, Tracy (Jason) Trahan, Erik Johnson, Ryan Johnson, Liz Fagen, Christopher Freiseis, Ava (Brad Stafslien) Freiseis, Hannah Peterson. Great grandchildren, Israel Ostrem, Landon Freiseis, Jaycee Erickson, Luke and Savanna Ray, and Sawyer Trahan; her sister, Marian Hoilien Seidlitz, special cousin, Zelda Alhborn, family friend, Chela, her special friend, Fran Benzing of Sparta, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers Wayne and Norman Hoilien, her first husband, Raymond Johnson, and her second husband, Clarence Peterson, her daughters, Cynthia Erickson and Christine Peterson, her grandchildren, Sara and Katherine Johnson, and son-in-law, Ernst Lubbe. A special thank you to Dr. Bill Caulkins who gave Mom exceptional care, kindness and understanding, the staff at Vernon Manor Nursing Home, Dr. Fouts and the Vernon Memorial Hospital staff.
