John (Jack) Miller, 82 of Viola, died Saturday, July 9th 2011. John (Jack) Miller, 82 of Viola, passed away Saturday, July 9th at the Bethel Home in Viroqua. Jack was born in Pocahontas, Iowa in 1929. In 1953 he joined the Army and was sent to Germany, where he met the love of his life and wife of 55 years, Marianne (Appel). Soon after their marriage they adopted their daughter, Christel and moved back to the US. Although Jack spent many years as an over the road truck driver, his true love was tinkering and building. Jack built 2 houses, remodeled one, and loved to tinker with his boats and cars. In 1980 Jack and Marianne moved to Adams County and owned the Homestead Caf. In Adams, he drove pulp truck while Marianne ran the restaurant. In 2002 Jack and Marianne moved to Viola to be close to Christel and her family. Still wanting to stay active, he worked at the apple orchards where he earned the nickname "Cadillac Jack". Jack is survived by his wife, Marianne (Appel) of Viola; daughter Christel Holcomb (Miller) of La Crosse; sisters Betty (Bob) Miess (Miller) of Dodgeville and Eileen Craig (Miller) of Muscoda; brother Cletus Doyle of Madison; and many grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. Jack is also survived by his wifes family in Germany and Holland that he very much enjoyed visiting. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Katherine (Suda) Miller; sisters Monica Flaherty (Miller) and Mary Schneider (Doyle); and brothers Dennis Doyle and Ray Miller. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at the Vosseteig Funeral Homes Henthorn Memorial Center in Viola. Friends may call on Wednesday from 12 noon until the time of the service at the Henthorn Memorial Center. The Vosseteig Funeral Homes Henthorn Memorial Center of Viola is serving the family.
