Joseph Clifford Hatlan Jr.

Joseph Clifford Hatlan Jr., age 61, of Viola, died on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at the VA Medical Center in Tomah, WI. Joe was born on August 7, 1961, in Viroqua to Joseph Clifford Hatlan Sr. and Mildred (Lee) Hatlan. He was confirmed and baptized at West Prairie Hauge Church. Joe attended grade school in Ferryville and attended De Soto High School for a short time, eventually receiving his GED. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on October 31, 1979, and was discharged on January 21, 1981. Following his time in the service, Joe worked various kinds of jobs raising tobacco, milking cows, and was a hired hand for many farmers. He also worked at Tri-State Breeders in Westby. Joe married Diane Harrington in June of 2002 in Waterloo, Iowa. They were married for 9 years until Diane died of cancer. Joe was a jack of all trades.

Survivors include his son, Joe Clifford Hatlan III of Viroqua, WI; four brothers, Myron (Marilyn) Hatlan of Sparta, Bernie (Taylor) Hatlan of Luray, Virginia, Calvin (Kendra) Hatlan of Hillsboro; Steve Hatlan of Tomah; one sister, Elizabeth (James) Broadhead of Westby; special cousin, Bobby Sandy; special aunt and uncle, David and Evelyn Lerimo; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Mildred Hatlan; two brothers, Gaylord Hatlan and Eugene Hatlan; his paternal grandparents, Lena and Art Hatlan; his maternal grandparents; Winston and Katherine Luckasson and Emil Lee; and many aunts and uncles.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family are appreciated.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00a.m. on Friday, April 28, 2023, at Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua. Pastor Mark Phillips will officiate. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Joe will be laid to rest with full military honors at the West Prairie Hauge Cemetery.
