Julian Duane Holen, Jr, age 52, died Tuesday, March 14, 2006 at his home in rural Westby. He was born in Viroqua on September 8, 1953 to Julian A. Holen, Sr. and Delores (Stakston) Holen. He was baptized on October 4, 1953 at Westby-Coon Prairie Lutheran Church and confirmed at Vang Lutheran Church on April 28, 1968 by Rev. H.O. Aasen. After graduation from Westby High School in 1971, he attended the University of Wisconsin Madison Short Course and then farmed in the Westby area. On June 12, 1977 he married Leila Maidana at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua. He served on the Northern Wisconsin Cooperative Tobacco Growers Pool Board of Directors, was a past board member of the Farmers Union, was the former chair of the Vernon County Democratic Party, and was involved with the newly formed Coulee Region Grape Growers Association. He is survived by his wife, Leila and their children: Sean (Deanna Nelson) Holen of Fort Lewis, WA; Michelle (Dan) Herricks of Cashton; Shaynan, Ashley, and Melissa, at home; and two grandchildren, Jesse and Erik Nelson. He is also survived by his sisters: Darlene (Lyle) Christopherson, Joanne Malphy, both of Janesville; Carol Mills of Onalaska; Irene (Glenn) Wood, and Inez (Elmer) Blank both of La Crosse; his father-in-law, F. Carlos Maidana; sisters-in-law: Karen (Charles) Dahl of Viroqua; Jacqueline Maidana of Florence, MA; Lee (Derek) Kuhl of Bryan, TX; brother-in-law Allen (Christie) Maidana of Houston, TX; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant in 1984, one brother in infancy, his mother-in-law, Joyce Maidana, Geraldine Maidana, and brother-in-law, Jim Malphy. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Westby. Pastor Gary Daines will officiate. Friends may call on Monday from 4 6 p.m. at the Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Hwy 14 in Westby, and at the church on Tuesday from noon 1:00 p.m. The Vosseteig Funeral Home of Westby is serving the family.
