Kathryn F. Hauge

December 18, 1932 — June 11, 2023

Kathryn Florence (Weber) Hauge, age 90, of rural Viroqua passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Sunday, June 11, 2023. She was born on December 18, 1932, in the town of Franklin to Nicholas and Bernice (Zitzner) Weber.

She attended Dach Ridge School and Viroqua Area Schools, graduating in 1951. After graduation, her first job was at the city bakery, which she enjoyed very much. In 1952, she worked at the First National Bank and later worked for Vernon County Farm Supply. She continued working there through 1968. In 1969, she worked at Gloria‘s Fashion, and in 1970 went to work for Wisconsin F.S. Inc. She worked there full-time until 1977. In 1978, she was hired at Viroqua Area Schools as a bookkeeper and continued there until her retirement in June of 1997.

On February 21, 1953, she married Chet Hauge. 1954, they started their life on her parents’ farm. Then, in 1959, they purchased land in Viroqua and in 1961 built their home. In 1965, at the age of 32, she became a widow. She and the children remained on the small farm they had built, where she lived until the time of her death.

Church family at the Viroqua Church of Christ was very special to Kathryn. She also enjoyed getting together with and planning reunions with her high school classmates to plan class reunions throughout the years.

Kathryn was the last and youngest of her family of seven and she remembered many of the hard times her family experienced as they grew up during the Great Depression. Whether it was hand-picking weeds and dandelions out of her lawn or tending to her garden and raspberries which she shared with family and friends, she had a mindset of “This needs to get done,” and strongly believed in a hard day's work. She was thorough and paid extreme attention to detail.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chet Hauge; her son, Kurt Hauge; and her grandson, Kyle Hauge, as well as several family members and close friends.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Joyce Hauge, of Westby; her son, Kelly (Marilyn) Hauge, of Viroqua; her daughter, Debra (Brian) Wisinski, of Stevens Point; six grandchildren: Nichol (Shaynn) Davey of Westby, Dachia (Andrew) Abt of Westby, Kutter Hauge of Viroqua, Ryan (Randi) of Chippewa Falls, Destinee Smith (Kris) of Wausau, Danielle (Luis) Melendez of Wausau; great-grandchildren: Kamryn, Raegan, Harper, Lincoln, Olivia, Macy (Jacob), Landon, Ryland, Kaden, Kullen, Kyler, Cameron, Greyson, Tayler, Teagan, Braedyn, and Amelia.

Special thanks to all hospital and nursing staff at Vernon Memorial Hospital as well as Moments Hospice for taking such wonderful care of Grandma.
