Kermit David Veum

Kermit David Veum, age 86, of Westby, passed away Sunday, October 27, 2024, at Norseland Nursing Home. David was born on December 26, 1937, to Kermit and Alice (Solberg) Veum. He was the oldest of four sons and grew up on a dairy/tobacco farm. When he was a pre-teenager, he contracted encephalitis that left him with epileptic seizures. David attended North Natwick Grade School and graduated from Westby High School with the class of 1955. After graduation, David continued to farm with his father. David was proficient at spearing tobacco, enjoyed riding horses (especially his horse Sparky), and listening and dancing to Old Time Music. He moved to Westby in 1989 and worked as a co-custodian at Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church where he met Elizabeth Bakkum. He also worked as a custodian for his brothers at the Veum Veterinary Clinic. David and Elizabeth were married on November 23, 1996, and together they were married just shy of 25 years before her passing.

They were members of Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church and the Westby Lions Club.

Survivors include his stepchildren, Ricky (Sandy) Bakkum, Mark (Laurie) Bakkum, Kim (Stephen) Hunt, Kyle (Laurie) Bakkum, and Scott (Nancy) Bakkum; 13 step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; his brothers, Trygve (Margie) Veum and Cedric (Margaret) Veum; his sister-in-law, Carol Veum; seven nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

David was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth; his parents; and his brother Paul.

A Funeral Service for David will be held at Noon on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church. Pastor Alyssa Weaver will officiate. A visitation will be held on Friday, November 1, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Vosseteig Funeral Home in Westby. Additional visitation will be held Saturday at the church from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. A luncheon will be held at the church immediately following the service. David will be laid to rest at Coon Prairie Cemetery. Online Condolences may be expressed at www.vossfh.com.
