Larene B. Nomann

Larene Berneeda Nomann, age 98, of Viroqua, Wisconsin, and formerly of Pocahontas, Iowa transitioned to her heavenly home to meet her Jesus on Friday, March 7, 2025, at Maplewood Terrace Assisted Living in Viroqua, Wisconsin in the care of St. Croix Hospice. Larene, twin daughter of Fred and Mary (Dirks) Hohensee, was born August 24, 1926, in Pocahontas, Iowa.

As a child she was called “Weeny” because she was the skinny twin. She graduated from Pocahontas High School in 1944. In her yearbook was written, “Squeeky” Larene has something waiting for her when she graduates. Could it be H_______? Yes, it could be”. On August 24, 1944, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and on her birthday, she DID marry Harold Nomann, a farmer, and they were married 54 years. She told her granddaughter that she believed the key to a successful marriage is to go to church, believe in God, and even though you’re going to have differences, just get them worked out before you go to sleep! Good advice! Harold died Feb. 12, 1999, of a heart attack. They farmed in Palmer, Pocahontas, and Plover, Iowa. In 1966, they had a farm auction and moved into Pocahontas. Harold and Larene had 3 children.

Larene was first and foremost a farmwife helping with the chores, animals, and crops, had a garden and canned her produce. She loved to cook and bake and after their children were in school, she was a cook at the Plover School. Other jobs Larene enjoyed were candling eggs at the Plover Produce, bookkeeper at the Plover Farmer’s Elevator, volunteered at the Plover Café, nurse’s aide and EMT-B at the Pocahontas Hospital for 26 years, volunteered at Mary’s Café in Pocahontas, helped with occasional transport for Powers Funeral Home, and helped the judges at the county fair. She and Harold were very active members of the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, VBS, attended the Ladies Circle group and both she and Harold helped make quilts for 3rd world countries. For many years they were also in a neighborhood card club. She crocheted many beautiful blankets for family and new babies. Later in life when she finally “had time” she enjoyed daily coffee time at the café with her many dear friends. Larene enjoyed mowing the lawn and keeping everything neat and clean. She was very good with crossword puzzles and sudoku. Her family always requested “Grandma’s pancakes” and they could count on her having a box of Honeycomb on hand! Larene will be remembered as “Grandma Moped” riding a moped in Pocahontas until age 91. While still working as an EMT-B she had gone out on a call and got so dirty she changed into 2 hospital gowns before going home and rode home on her moped!

Larene is survived by her sons, Arnold (Coralie) of Viroqua, WI, Darvin (Kathy) of Tempe, AZ, and daughter, Elaine (Chris) of Des Moines, Ia.; sister, Lucille Boelman of Ankeny, Ia.; 8 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren, 5 step-great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Louise Hohensee and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; her twin sister LaVerne Ackerman; and brothers, Lester and Leonard Hohensee.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Pocahontas, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Larene will be laid to rest at Summit Hill Cemetery in Pocahontas, Iowa.
