LaVerne E. Wang, age 91 of Westby, died Tuesday, January 12, 2010. LaVerne E. Wang, 91, who resided at Norseland Nursing home Westby died early Tuesday morning, January 12, 2010. He was born July 19, 1918 in Clinton township the son of Evan and Nora (Holte) Wang. LaVerne served his country from November 1939 until his discharge in May 1945. He was a Sergeant and Squad Leader taking part in the invasion of North Africa, Sicily and Italy. During this service he was wounded twice. He spent several months recuperating in hospitals in Italy and North Africa plus several months as a patient in different state-side hospitals .He had the privilege of being honor guard for President Roosevelt when the Big Three met in Casablanca. LaVerne was awarded the Silver Star , Bronze Star and Purple Heart & Oak Leaf Cluster. After returning from service he married Esther Skoglund and they later were divorced. He farmed for a number of years and then moved to Janesville to work at General Motors. LaVerne retired from General Motors and moved to his lake home in Winter Wisconsin. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, four wheelers, snowmobiling and taking care of his and neighbors lawn and gardens. He was a regular attendee at the Snowflake Ski Tournament and the Birkerbine ski race. He also enjoyed participating in fishing tournaments in the Hayward area. LaVerne was a member of the Winter American Legion and Cashton VFW. He is survived by his four children LeRoy Wang of Westby, Linda Bowen of Westby, Ellen Brekke of Whitehall and Sherry (Dale) Fromm of Holmen, five grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and by many nieces and nephews . Also survived by his sister Evelyn Schye, Cashton and sister Marilyn (Ray) Snodgrass, Union Grove. In addition to his parents he was proceeded in death by his brother Kenneth Wang who was killed in action in Luxenburg; brothers: Harold Wang and Leif Wang; sister-in-law Clarice Mankee; brother-in-law Hilmer Schye; sister-in-law Irene Wang and grandson Dustin Wang. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Hwy 14 in Westby. Pastor Dennis Hallemeier will officiate. Burial with military rites by the Cashton V.F.W. will be in the Coon Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the Vosseteig Funeral Home in Westby.
