Leona Leland Melvin, age 91 of Viroqua and formerly of LaFarge, died early Wednesday morning, June 7, 2006 at the Vernon Manor Nursing Home in Viroqua. She was born on May 12, 1915 in Bloomingdale, Wisconsin to Walter and Arabelle (Perkins) Hughes. She graduated from high school in 1932 and earned her teaching certificate from Vernon County Normal School. She was united in marriage to Cecil Melvin at the LaFarge parsonage. Leona had worked at Badger Ordinance for a short time, and had also worked at Borgens Caf in Westby for a few years. She was an active member of the Faith United Methodist Church on Salem Ridge. She taught Sunday school and was a member of the United Methodist Women. Leona was also involved with the 4-H and was known as a very good cook. She loved music and played several instruments (including the accordion) by ear. She is survived by he two children: Ronald (Paulette) Melvin of Janesville and April (Randy) Young of Viroqua; four grandchildren: Amy (Charlie) Nyborg of Janesville, Jason (Susie) Melvin of Bellvile, Daniel Young and his friend and her son, Lisa and Chase of Viroqua, and Vanna (Derek) Schroeder of Viroqua; five great-grandchildren: Audra and Chase Nyborg, and Libby, Ben and Lucy Melvin, and an expected grandson (Vanna and Derek, in July); two sisters-in-law: Orpha Hughes and Doris Melvin; nieces; nephews; cousins; and other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Melvin on December 2, 1986; three brothers: Austin, Virgil and Manlin Hughes; one sister, Verona Kellicut; one niece, Donna Marie Nelson; two brothers-in-law: Keith and Kenneth Melvin; and her parents-in-law: Ray and Dottie Melvin. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 9, 2006 at the Faith United Methodist Church on Salem Ridge, rural LaFarge. Pastor George "Skip" Shick will officiate with burial in the Salem Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 W. Decker (Hwy 56) in Viroqua. Friends may also call at the church after 10:00 a.m. on Friday. The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.
