Mardis M. Vance, 89, of Viroqua passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 26, 2007 at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in LaCrosse. She was born February 7, 1918 near Viola, Wisconsin to Omer and Lulu Joseph. She graduated from Viola High School in 1938, and was united in marriage to Alvia Vance on October 4, 1940 at the Lutheran Parsonage in Waukon, Iowa. They lived all of their married life in the Viola and Viroqua area, until his death on July 9, 1960. Mardis worked for many years at the Viroqua Leaf Tobacco Company and in later years at D. W. Meats, both in Viroqua. Mardis is survived by three children, Janice (Donald) Matson of Lakeville, Minn., Gary (Marsha) Vance of Onalaska, Wis. and William (Laura) Vance of Blue Mounds, Wis.; grandchildren, Debbie, Todd, Bradley, Michele, Alex and Maria; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Alyssa, Erik, Annika, Rebecca, Mitchell, Jameson and Adren; two brothers, William (Alberta) Joseph of La Crosse, Wis. and Larry (Sally) Joseph of Madison, Wis. She was preceeded in death by her parents, husband and brother, Acel Joseph. Mardis lived the last 10 years at Park View Manor in Viroqua. She loved to fish, tend flowers, beach comb in Florida and do volunteer work. She crocheted beautiful doilies which were generously shared with family and friends. She loved people and made friends wherever she went. There will be a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 21st at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua. Friends may call at the church from 10:00 a.m. until time of services. Memorials may be made to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church food pantry. Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua is serving the family.
