Margaret M. Burkhardt , 100 of Viroqua, died on Monday, October 24, 2011. Margaret M. Burkhardt , 100 of Viroqua, died on Monday, October 24, 2011 at the Bethel Home. She was born in Viroqua, Wisconsin on February 12, 1911 to Lora E. and Dr. George W. Minshall. She attended the Viroqua Public Schools and graduated from Viroqua High School in 1929. Margaret attended and graduated from Vernon County Teachers College and earned a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education from the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse, Wisconsin. She taught in several rural schools in Vernon County and Kindergarten in Viroqua Area Schools. She married Kenneth L. Burkhardt on June 14, 1934 and he preceded her in death on March 10, 1987. She was a member of the Vernon Area Retired Educators and its past President, a member of and past President of the Vernon Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, a member of the Vernon Historical Society, a member of the Vernon Republican Womens Organizaton, a member of the Viroqua Hills Golf Association a member of the United Methodist Church and its choir. Margaret is survived by her daughter, Joanne (Harlon) Mehlum of Altoona, Wis.; and her son, Jim (Joan) Burkhardt of Viroqua; nine grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Kenneth she was preceded in death by her daughter, Judith and her husband, Larry Mickelson; sisters: Louise Martin and husband, Stevens, Sarah Johnson and husband, Francis, and Emma Grebel and husband, Grant; her grandson-in-law, Christopher Brown. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 27, 2011 at Viroqua United Methodist Church. Pastor Ethan Larson will officiate with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.
