Margaret "Peggy" Louise Turben

Margaret “Peggy” Louise Turben, age 91, of Viroqua, died Friday, November 4, 2022, at Vernon Manor with her family by her side. Peggy was born on December 14, 1930, in Soldiers Grove to Melvin and Ingeborg (Everson) Swiggum. Peggy graduated from North Crawford Schools. On March 12, 1948, she married Gilbert Turben by a ‘justice of the peace’ on the Prairie du Chien courthouse steps. This began Peggy’s 70 year long adventure with Gilbert, together raising 12 children and her special sister, Karen Swiggum. Peggy felt that her greatest accomplishment in her life was raising her loving children. In addition to being a farmer’s wife and raising her family, she also worked as a dietary cook for 31 years at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua. Peggy had a great love for sewing, decorating her house and yard for the holidays, and gardening.

Our mom leaves behind a legacy of love that we will forever cherish.

Survivors include her twelve children: Charles (Rachel), Gilbert Jr., Mary Johnson, Susan (Don) Carlson, David (Elaine), Mark (Brenda), Brian (Janice), Martha (Gary) Leis, Brent (Beverly), Barbara Frank, Bradley (Penny), and Melissa (Mike) Skildum; 26 grandchildren and their spouses; many great-grandchildren; her sister, Martha Burns; and many nieces and nephews.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gilbert; her siblings, Arnty Swiggum and Karen Swiggum; great-grandson, Tyler Turben; and two sons-in-law, Rickey Johnson and Randy Olson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Peggy’s name to Vernon Manor or St. Croix Hospice.

A Celebration of Peggy’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2022, at Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua. Pastor Bob Streeter will officiate. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Peggy will be laid to rest at Kickapoo United Lutheran Cemetery. Online Condolences may be expressed at www.vossfh.com.
