Marian Nuttestad

October 27, 1911 — December 11, 2014

Marian Nuttestad, 103, died Thursday, December 11, 2014. Marian was born October 27, 1911 in La Crosse, Wi. Daughter of Carolyn and Lauritz Veum, she was one of five children. Alida, Lucas Veum, Marian Nuttestad, Kermit Veum, and Verna Frye are the order in which they were born and Marian was the last survivor, dying at 103. Marian was married in 1937, and in 1938 she gave birth to her only daughter Marilen (Sydow). Marian started out working in a grocery store, and then in 1955 went to Beauty school in La Crosse. Her first job as a beautician was working with her sister Verna. Later she bought the Cameo in Westby, and ran it for 40 years. Over the years Marian took some wonderful trips. She traveled to Europe five times, Norway twice, and even went to Mexico taking her staff from the beauty shop along. Marian was a member of the Better Business Women and the Hair Dressing Association of Wisconsin. Marian was also the person responsible for starting Westbys Syttende Mai parade. The first parade was mostly a bunch of children riding bikes and dress up but it has really evolved since then. Her last three years were spent at the Bethel Home. Marian is survived by her daughter, Marilen Sydow; three loving grandchildren: Duane Sydow Sr, Daniel Sydow, and Darcy Lavine; as well as a special friend Harold Larson. There will be a celebration of life held at a later date. The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.
