Marie Hagen

Marie Hagen, 99, of Westby, died Sunday, August 9, 2015. Marie O. Hagen, 99 of Westby, died Sunday, August 9, 2015 at Norseland Nursing Home. She was born March 19, 1916 to Syver and Mabel (Hegge) Thorsgard in New England, North Dakota. In 1934 Marie came to Wisconsin and met Marvin Hagen and they were married on November 20, 1937. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Rainy Butte Lutheran Church in New England, North Dakota and has been a member of the Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church since her marriage on November 20, 1937 to Marvin L. Hagen of Westby Wisconsin. In 1954 she was in charge of the lunch program at Unseth School. Marie was also employed by Borgens Caf, Luhmans Retail Store, and Vernon Memorial Hospital for four years and then accepted the job of being the Westby School Food Service Supervisor for 25 years. Marie also did banquet catering for school functions, and dinners for the area Co-ops. For 18 years, Marie really enjoyed doing the Smorgasbord for Syttende Mai. Marie was active at Westby Coon Prairie where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Dorcas Circle for 50 years. She was also a member of the Norseland Garden Club, Westby Historical Society, Sons of Norway, Vernon Arts and Crafts, Norskedalen, Norseland Nursing Home Auxiliary and together with her husband, Marvin, belonged to the Westby and Viroqua Square Dance Club. Marie will always be remembered for her many hobbies which included quilting, crocheting, rosemaling, and baking. She loved to share her many baked items with others. At one time Marie engaged in cake decorating. Marvin and Marie were great lefse makers and enjoyed doing that together. Marie was a very caring person, always ready to help someone out. She loved her family: children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Marie is survived by one daughter, Marlene Gates of Sun City, AZ; one son, Ronald (Sue) Hagen of Park Falls, WI; grandchildren: Tami Moe Billgren and her husband, Per; Dan (Robyn) Moe, Staci (Gregory) Guenther, Heidi (Nick) Wara, Stephanie (Andrew) Cunha; great-grandchildren: Heather Flikkema, Garrette Moe, Carson Moe, Austin Guenther, Haddie Wara, Calvin Wara; great-great-grandchild: Kai Flikkema; sister-in-law, Janet (Bill) Fahey; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two children: Robert and Ann Marie; two brothers, Alfred Thorsgard and LeRoy Thorsgard; one sister, Evelyn Haugen; one brother-in-law, Orville Haugen; six sisters-in-law: Maydelle and Florence Hagen, Gladys Ottum, Doris Burkhardt, Cleo Jefson, Eunice Brendum. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church. Pastor Daniel Wollman will officiate with burial in the Coon Prairie Cemetery.
