Marilyn Joyce Kvigne went home to be with Jesus on May 1, 2024. Marilyn was born to Elling and Esther (Anderson) Peterson on September 2, 1935. She was baptized at South Kickapoo Church and confirmed together with Stephen at Utica Lutheran Church. Marilyn graduated from Gays Mills High School in 1953. She attended Vernon County Teacher’s College in Viroqua and taught in a one-room schoolhouse. On October 20, 1956, Marilyn married her high school sweetheart, Stephen Kvigne, at Utica Lutheran Church. They were blessed with six children: Miriam (Darrel) Oldenburg, Anne (Clay) Heath, Steven (Patty), Karen (Kevin) Benzing, John (Dawn), and Benjamin (Jill). Marilyn was a very loving grandmother to 22 grandchildren: Dustin (Marin), Jordan (Jessica), Kyle (Anna), Travis (Lauryn) Oldenburg; Clay, Austin (Jenn), Kenzie Heath; Steven (Chelsea) Kvigne, Amanda (Casey) Leao, Lena (Alejandro) Martinez, Sever (Faith) Kvigne, Olevia (Casey) Spencer; Stephani (Colton) Hopwood, Nolan (Jessica), Caleb (Tara), Joshua (Megan), Samuel Benzing; Brenna, Reanna Kvigne; Marta, Mylon, Micah Kvigne. She was also blessed with 18 great-grandchildren and 2 more on the way.
Marilyn was a great example of the love of Christ. She was a compassionate, selfless, joy-filled person, illuminating the light of Jesus throughout her life. She and Stephen worked hard on their dairy farm to give a good life to their family. She was once named Farm Bureau Woman of the Year. Marilyn gave many presentations to church groups sharing her strong faith in Jesus, teaching, and leading Bible studies. She was a member of Crawford County Homemakers, 4-H leader, Gideons International, and sang in West Prairie Singers with Stephen. Marilyn enjoyed playing piano and singing, accompanying other singing groups, gardening, feeding the work crews on the farm and helping with chores. Marilyn and Stephen also enjoyed traveling with friends on the Sugar Creek bus trips to New York, Branson, Smoky Mountains, Grand Ole Opry, and New England among others, as well as Farm Bureau convention trips.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Esther and Elling Peterson; her mother/father-in-law Mabel and Julius Kvigne; brother-in-law, Merlin Kvigne; sister-in-law, Shirley Kvigne; niece, Mary Kvigne; and nephew, James Peterson. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Stephen; her children and their families; her brothers, Ronnie (Lola) and Paul (Carolyn) Peterson; brother-in-law, William Kvigne; sister-in-law, Francille Kvigne; as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Marilyn’s family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of Vernon Memorial Hospital, Vernon Manor Nursing Home, and St. Croix Hospice for the care, compassion, and comfort offered to them in Marilyn’s final days of life.
A Celebration of Marilyn’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Bad Axe Church, S5755B County Road N in rural Viroqua. Pastor Andrew Lewis will officiate. A meal will be held following the service. A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10, at Vosseteig Funeral Home in Gays Mills. Additional visitation will be held Saturday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Marilyn will be laid to rest at the Utica Lutheran Church Cemetery.
