Marilyn Margaret (Montgomery) Thompson, 83, of Prairie du Chien, formerly of Soldiers Grove, passed away on June 10th, 2023, after a short stay at the Prairie Maison Nursing Home.
Marilyn was born on October 12th, 1939, to Donald F. and Anna C. (Lechnir) Montgomery in Monona, IA. She began her work, at the age of 13, as a clerk in the grocery store in Monona. After she graduated from M-F-L High School, Marilyn went on to try her hand at many different clerical and domestic jobs before landing at 3M in 1965, as a Lab Technician. Although she enjoyed this job, her true calling was on the farm, with the love of her life, Clarence G. Thompson, whom she married on February 10th, 1972. Marilyn took the leap in 1980, and began doing anything and everything around the farm to help him out, including being his caretaker in later years. It was nothing to see her fixing fences or driving farm equipment. Clarence preceded her in death on December 7th, 1999.
Marilyn loved her large garden, baking, sewing, her flower beds, and especially enjoyed embroidering. In recent years, she loved any time she got to spend with her very special great-grandson, Max Ziegler. She relished playing and singing with him. Although they never had children, Marilyn is survived by an honorary granddaughter, Kelssi (Aaron) Ziegler of Prairie du Chien. She is also survived by Roger and Marcia Swiggum of Soldiers Grove, a very exceptional nephew and niece.
Marilyn was predeceased in death by her parents; her mother and father-in-law, Ruth and Otto Thompson; sister, Shirley Meyer; brother Tom Montgomery; sister and brother in-law, Marion and Nordahl Swiggum; brother in-law, Ken Peters; and many other relatives. She is survived by her sister, Norma (Dick) Asleson; brother, James Montgomery all of Monona, IA; sister-in-law, Dorothy Peters of Austin, Texas; and brother-in-law, Fritz Meyer of Monona; as well as many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Gays Mills.
A prayer service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 16, 2023, at Vosseteig Funeral Home in Gays Mills. A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. Marilyn will be laid to rest at the Gays Mills Cemetery.
