Martha M. Schee

Martha M. Schee, age 99 of Westby, died Sunday, July 01, 2007. Martha Mork Schee, 99 of Westby, WI and formerly of La Crosse, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 1, 2007 in Westby at the Norseland Nursing Home. She was born on July 22, 1907 in Porsgrunn, Norway to Dr. Ole and Karine Mork. The family came by steamer in 1909 to the United States entering through Ellis Island, New York. They would then travel by train to Blair, WI where her father had established his medical practice.'Marty' attended Blair elementary and high school. She had such fond memories of growing up in a small Wisconsin town. Following graduation Martha went on to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and graduated with a degree in nursing from the UW and Madison General Hospital. It was in Madison where she met her beloved husband Eric Schee. They were married in 1935. During World War II, both she and her husband served their country. Marty was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corp, serving in Pearl Harbor, Panama, the Phillipines and France. The couple eventually settled in La Crosse, WI. where they lived up on the bluffs until 1984 when Eric passed away. Marty moved to Montara, California in 1985 to live with her sister Hjordis Bell, where she enjoyed making new friends and a new home for herself. Marty loved living by the sea and the mountains. It always lifted her spirits to be near them. Martha lived on the coast for 23 years before she made her final trip back to the Westby area 'Timber Coulee' after her 101 year old sister, Hjordis passed away. 'Marty was a treasured friend to those who knew her over the years'. Martha was a loving and giving person, always taking care of those around her. She adored her three granddaughters, loved life and was always willing to give of herself. She especially loved 'Timber Coulee' where she and her family and friends would gather to share in a good camp fire, share stories, listen to and play wonderful classical music, and fish for German Brown Trout. Mrs. Schee is survived by her son Thomas Schee, daughter-in-law Jill (Pinski) Schee, three grandchildren, Keetra Tipton (Robert) Chicago, Kelly Schee, Wausau, and Katie Schee, Madison: Her precious Great Grandson Luke Robert Tipton and four step granddaughters, Stephanie Knutson(Brett), Jennifer Thill, Melissa Thill, Kathryn Thill and one sister, Elsa Lubnow of Waukesha, WI., and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, and great-grand-nieces. Private family services will be held. Memorials may be directed to Norskedalen. The Vosseteig Funeral Home of Westby is serving the family.
