Martin I. Morkrid

Martin Ira Morkrid, age 95, of Viroqua, died Friday, March 27, 2009. Martin Ira Morkrid, age 95, of Viroqua, passed away on Friday evening, March 27, 2009 at Vernon Manor Nursing Home in Viroqua where he had been a resident since April of 2008. Martin was born to Iver and Susanne (Fladhammer) Morkrid on December 21, 1913 at Southam, ND. Martin married Fern F. Fish on July 2, 1938. Fern passed away July 31, 1976. Martin then married Agnes Thompson in April 1978. Martin worked for Viroqua Area Schools for 38 years. He enjoyed woodworking and making projects for his children and grandchildren which will be cherished forever by his family. He was a quiet, gentle, loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a longtime member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua. He had been in failing health for the last year, but he enjoyed the many visits from his family and the wonderful care he received from Vernon Manor's caring and thoughtful employees. He enjoyed participating in all of the activities provided by the activity department at Vernon Manor. He is survived by his wife, Agnes; one son, Earl (Joan) Morkrid of Holmen, Wis.; four daughters: Diane (Bill) Bross of Viroqua, Gloria McCarter of Pleasant Prairie, Wis., Karen (Theodore) Larson of Westby and Shirley (Robert) Kelsey of Greenville, SC. He is also survived by two step-daughters: Linda (Dennis) Davidson of Madison and Geraldine Steely of Round Rock, Texas; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Fern; son, Kenneth in 1970; daughter, Selma Jean in 1946; two brothers: James and Selmer; two sons-in-law: Harlan Johnson and James McCarter; two step-daughters: Ida Mae Hilgendorf and Marilyn Thompson. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua. The Rev. Lindsay Paul Jordan and The Rev. Margaret Eiben Hoversten will officiate with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 4-6 p.m. at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 W. Decker Street (Hwy 56) in Viroqua. Friends may also call at the church 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. On line condolences may be offered at www.vosseteigfuneralhomes.com .
