Marvel L. Ambrose

Marvel La Vita (Husker) Ambrose, age 93, of Viola, died October 1, 2008. Marvel La Vita (Husker) Ambrose, age 93, of Viola, died October 1, 2008 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. She was born on October 2, 1914, the fourth child of John and Florence (Roberts) Husker. She was born in the log home on Husker Hollow Road near La Farge that her grandfather, Willis J. Roberts built after moving to Wisconsin from Ohio after the civil war. Marvel graduated from Ottervale country school, La Farge High School, and Vernon County Normal and then taught school for 13 years. On April 4, 1942 she married Lynden "Tiny" Ambrose and bought a home in Viola, Wisconsin after Lynden came home from WWII in 1945. No children were born to this union, but they enjoyed their many nieces and nephews. During her lifetime Marvel belonged to the Womens Relief Corp. in Viola, La Farge, and Viroqua. She was Dept. State President in 1981 and 1982 and held offices after joining the WRC in 1941. She also belonged to the Viola Mound Park Birthday Club, Viola Senior Citizens Friendship Club, Viola American Legion Auxiliary, and the Sarah Circle of the United Methodist Church. Marvel worked at Columbian Pin Company in Viola for several years and at the Richland Center Bowling Pin Factory. Her lifetime hobbies were: fishing, hunting, sewing and taking care of her gardens and flowers in Viola. She is survived by her sister, Oma L. (Husker) Smith of Ijamsville, Maryland; seven nieces; two nephews; many great nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lynden "Tiny" Ambrose; her parents, John Husker and Florence (Roberts) Husker; two brothers, Leslie and Branson; one sister, Elma; two brothers-in-law, Roy K. Smith and Leonard J. Ambrose; one sister-in-law, Mildred L. Ambrose; one niece, Jeanette (Ambrose) Jacobson; two nephews, Kenneth R. Smith and Adam J. DeWitt. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at the Viola United Methodist Church. Pastor Laverne Larson will officiate with burial in the Viola Cemetery.
