Mary Mockrud, 98, of Viroqua died Thursday, February 14, 2013 Mary Mockrud, 98, of Viroqua died Thursday, February 14, 2013 at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua. Mary Peterson Mockrud was born December 30, 1914 to Hellick & Brita Peterson in Vernon County. She attended Dach Ridge School, Viroqua High School & Vernon County Normal School. She taught several years in rural schools and worked for Vernon County Human Services for 36 years until retirement. She was married to Paul Mockrud. Daughter Patrice was their greatest joy and best friend. Mary was an active member of Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church, WELCA, and charter member of the Anna circle; where her dear friends bonded in Christ. She helped establish a gift shop at Vernon Memorial Hospital and assisted its growth for many years. She knit baby caps for newborns for many years until her eyesight failed. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul Mockrud, daughter Patrice Mockrud; brothers Arthur, Tilman Peterson & Harold Fortney; sisters Karrina Peterson, Bertha Methum, Anna Jenick and Laura Cornwall. Mary is survived by a sister-in-law Carmen Mockrud; special nieces Marlene Pieterick and Janet (Roger) Mueller who were always there for her. Other nieces and nephews special in Marys life were; Paul (Diane) Methum, Pete Peterson, Richard Peterson, Jill (Chuck) Broadbeck, Linda (Marc) Cooper, Alice Jane (Bob) Berg, Carol (Peter) Dahlke, Bob Nimz; special neighbors Elaine and Hank Hendrickson, Erma and Trygve Overbo, Anita (Jeff) Burkhardt; and other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends here and in Norway. The family wishes to give s special Thank You to Kathy Overbo and Marla Hurley for being the two people responsible for Marys coming home for the last month of her life. It was Marys "Last Wish Come True". Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church. Pastor Dennis Hallemeier will officiate with burial to follow in Coon Prairie Cemetery. Friend may call at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the services at 11. The Vosseteig Funeral Homes of Westby and Viroqua are serving the family.
