Melvin Young, 81, of Viroqua, died Sunday, June 28, 2015. Melvin James Young, 82, of Viroqua died Sunday, June 28, 2015 at the Vernon Manor in Viroqua, where he has been a resident for the past year. Melvin was born August 16, 1932 in Prairie du Chein to Anna Allen and Porter Young. He was raised by his mother Anna and step father Aquilla Allen. He was baptized and confirmed in Chaseburg at St. Peters Evangelical Lutheran Church. Melvin married Lillian "Orla" Dahl on June 13, 1953. Together they had four sons and three daughters. He loved to teach his kids and grandkids about animals and enjoyed having fun and teasing the grandkids. He loved hunting and fishing all his life. He loved the river and went on several hunting trips for bear and elk to name a few. He used to go salmon and smelt fishing, rattlesnake and coon hunting. When he was unable to go he would be sitting in front of the television watching nature and knew all about animals and loved to talk about them. His dream would have been to move to Alaska and live off the land. He enjoyed working in his garden and just loved to be outside. Melvin had several jobs from logging, farming, working for the highway department, and had his own business butchering on the farm until he had to retire early due to Parkinsons disease. Melvin is survived by his wife, Lillian; four sons: Mike (Gwen), Larry (Theresa), Mark (Lisa), and Tim (Carol); three daughters: Cheryl (Tom) Walsh, Lisa (Harry) Mclees, and Kristi (Jeff) Buroker; 17 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and one brother, Lee (Janet) Allen of La Crosse. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Pat and Howard Allen; and sisters, Dolly Vander Schaaf and Eileen Wienke. Funeral Services will be held at 11 am on Thursday, July 2, 2015 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. The Rev. Stephen Minnema will officiate with burial to follow in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday, July 1, 2015 from 4-6 pm at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home. Friends may also call at the church on Thursday from 10 am until the time of service at 11 am.
