Miguel Angel Velazquez, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on September 24, 2024, in Westby, Wisconsin, at the age of 71. Born to the late Antonio Velazquez and Socorro Pedroza de Velazquez on May 9, 1953, in Mexico City, Mexico. Miguel's life was a testament to his friendly, loving, and kind nature, which left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.
Miguel's journey led him from the vibrant streets of Mexico City where he worked as a Superintendent in charge of managing road construction work for Contratistas Unidos Mexicanos to the tranquil town of Westby, WI. It was while on vacation in California that changed the trajectory of Miguel’s life when by divine intervention, he met Judy Schmidt in a small piano bar.
The two were married on March 26th, 1988, in Torrance California. In 1993, they moved to Wisconsin Rapids to be closer to Judy’s family where they lived and worked for 19 years. In their retirement, they settled in Westby, WI where they shared a beautiful life together in the country, taking time to appreciate the simpler things in life.
Miguel had a strong work ethic which was evident throughout his career at the Biron Paper Mill in Biron, Wisconsin, where he was a respected employee. Miguel also served his community with distinction as an Auxiliary Police Officer for the city of Wisconsin Rapids. In 2001, due to various health issues, he left the papermill and worked part-time as a school bus driver for Lamer’s Bus line, a driver for Wheels of Independence transporting disabled/elderly to their doctor appointments, a medical interpreter for Aspirus+ CAP Services and a court interpreter for Wood County, all roles which showcased his commitment to service.
Miguel was a devoted father to Elia aka Lupita, Melissa, Denise (married to Josiah Brandt), and Michael (married to Amelia). His role as a grandfather to Valerie, Nicole, Deklyn, Natalia, and Hudson brought him immense joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Miguel, although not much of an outdoors person (he hated mosquitos) developed a passion for camping and fishing with Judy. He loved taking car rides together and exploring the beautiful area they now called home. He was also an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, watching the games was a favorite pastime that brought him great excitement and happiness. He loved telling jokes, anyone who met Miguel had probably heard the one about “Why the mouse came out of the closet”. Miguel left an imprint on anyone who met him, was loved by many and will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Judy; his four children, Elia (aka Lupita}, Melissa, Denise (Josiah), and Michael (Amelia); his grandchildren, Valerie, Nicole, Deklyn, Natalia, and great-grandchildren Elijah, Jasiah, Namiah, and baby Hudson; his eight siblings from Mexico City; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who will miss him dearly. Miguel was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Gerardo Velazquez.
Miguel's life was a beautiful mosaic of the relationships he nurtured, the work he accomplished, and the joy he spread. His friendly demeanor made him a pillar in his community, and his loving and kind nature was a comfort to all. He will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his infectious smile, and his generous spirit.
