96 800x600 Nordis Fortney, age 85 of Viroqua, died Monday, February 9, 2015 after a short stay at the Bethel Home. She was born on August 4, 1929 in Viroqua to Martin and Esther (Honaas) Gulbrandsen. She graduated from U.W.-Madison with a degree in Home Economics. On August 18, 1950, she was united in marriage to Roger Fortney. They lived in Hopkinsville, Kentucky for two years while Roger served in the U.S. Army. After returning to Viroqua, Nordis taught Home Economics at the Viroqua High School and was also the food services director. She loved her family and she enjoyed reading, quilting, traveling, politics and spending time at the lake. Nordis was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and the WELCA. She is survived by five children: Tom (Mary K.) of Viroqua, David of Waukesha, Jim of Spring Green, Ann (Scott) Bush of Madison and Carolyn Putnam of Madison; grandchildren: Cullen Fortney of Columbia Falls, MT, Michael Fortney of Milwaukee, Nick, Rachel, Ben and Natalie Fortney of Spring Green, Stella and Margo Bush of Madison, Hana Putnam of Tempe, AZ, and Lucy Putnam of Madison; siblings: Ole (Judy) Gulbrandsen of Viroqua, Ruth (Ron) Panton of Austin, TX, Anne (Fred) Lowe of Hudson, and Helen (Chuck) Maulbetsch of Middleton; other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Roger Fortney on August 5, 1996, and one sister-in-law, Dana Fortney. Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 13, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua. Pastor Steven Minnema will officiate with burial in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday after 10 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers or plants, memorials may be directed to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or the charity of your choice.
