Arvina "Opal" Volden, age 88 of Westby, died Thursday, April 10, 2008. Arvina "Opal" Volden, age 88 of Westby, went to her heavenly home Thursday, April 10, 2008. Opal was born June 15, 1919 in Vernon County to Bernard and Agnes (Thompson) Ostrem. She attended Nerison School. On June 15, 1940 she married Otis Volden who preceded her in death in 1996. They farmed in rural Chaseburg, until they retired to Westby in 1993. Opal was well known for her lefsa and according to Dave Vosseteig she made the very best turnovers. She was an avid quilter and made graduation quilts for each of her grandchildren. She was an active member of the Chaseburg American Legion Auxiliary, the Norseland Auxiliary and Westby Senior Citizens. She was frequently seen walking around Westby and walked her mile in the annual Chaseburg Cancer Run/Walk. Opal was a long standing active member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Chaseburg. She is survived by six daughters: Kathleen Volden of La Crosse; Judith (Jon) Koula of Westby; Bernadette (Eugene) Johnson of Chaseburg; Vickie Volden and friend Larry of Port Orchard, WA; Cheryl (Morris) Proctor of Genoa; Marla (Tom) Jones of La Crosse; 18 grandchildren: Jeffery (Connie) Brueggen, Debra (Tim) Higley, Lynn (Mike) Jamesson, David (Amy) Brueggen, Eric Brueggen and friend Brenda, Jill (Dave) Hengel, Kelsey (Brett) Janzen, Phillip (Joanne) Johnson, Joshua (Carolyn) Johnson, Krista (Michael) Woodring, Aaron Volden, Heath, Jared, and Cole Proctor, Jessica Scholl and fianc Adam, Seth Scholl and fiance Jackie, Dylan and Devon Jones; 29 great-grandchildren: Karen, Marc, Katie, Kyle and Randy Brueggen, Zackery Reyburn, Tatiana Bueno, Adam, Madeline, Patrick and Samuel Higley, Hanna and Garrett Kloety, Matt (Liz) Skoy, Tiffany Miles, Danica and Maxwell Hengle, Alex, Thomas and Michaela Johnson, Robin McClelland, Corey Volden, Hailey Proctor, Dade and Mason Cogburn, Austen, Breanna, Raven and Isaiah Holzer; special nieces: Rena, Susan, Alice, Debbie, Betty and Sandy; special nephew: Mike and very special friend, Angie Hintz; four sisters: Rose (Clarence) Rodgers, Olene (Jerry) Henning, Barb Role, Ann Monahan; one brother: Gordon Ostrem; two sisters-in-law: Marian Pfingsten, Doris Volden; many nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, David; grandson, Daniel Koula; three sisters; six brothers; sisters and brothers-in law. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, 2008 at St. Peters Ev. Lutheran Church, Chaseburg, WI. Rev. Steven Oldre will officiate with burial in the Bethany Cemetery, rural Viroqua. Friends may call on Saturday, April 12 from 4-7 p.m. at the Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Main St (Hwy 14) in Westby. Friends may also call at the church on Sunday after 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers and plants memorials may be sent to Bethany Lutheran Church. The Vosseteig Funeral Home of Westby is serving the family.
