Orville "Orv" Herman Schaldach, age 92 of Viroqua, died Tuesday evening, September 27, 2011. Orville "Orv" Herman Schaldach, age 92 of Viroqua, died Tuesday evening, September 27, 2011 at the Tomah VA Medical Center. He was born on January 8, 1919 in Chaseburg to George and Matilda (Kotski) Schaldach. He graduated from Central High School in 1939. Orv served in the U.S. Army from December 3, 1941 until October 5, 1945 with the Infantry where he was wounded in the Manila Campaign and was awarded the Bronze Star for his leadership as a sergeant and rifleman. He was also awarded the Purple Heart, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and six overseas service bars. Following his service to our country, Orv owned and operated the Viroqua Locker Plant. On December 21, 1945 he was united in marriage to Jean Marie Curtis. He enjoyed bowling and was an active baseball player with the Viroqua Eagles after the War. Orv was a life member of the Running-Johnson-Ray VFW Post 3032, Jacobson-Olson American Legion Post 138 and the Viroqua Eagles Arie 2707. Orv and Jean enjoyed camping and for 22 years they spent winters in Texas He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed the Packers, Badgers and Brewers. Orv is survived by one son, David (Sandy Wood) Schaldach of Warrens; one daughter, Lynn (Arden) Zitzner of Viroqua; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Jeannette DeLap of Lake Mills, WI; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by one son, Curtis Schaldach; his wife, Jean who died on January 17, 2009; grandson, Aaron David Schaldach; one brother, Gerald "Jerry" Schaldach; two sisters: Anita Warner and Renata Jensen. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 West Decker (Hwy 56) in Viroqua. Pastor Ethan Larson will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in the Viroqua Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. and on Saturday after 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the Viroqua American Legion Baseball Team. The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.
