Orvis M. Holte, 85, of Westby died August 1, 2010. Orvis M. Holte, 85, of Westby died August 1, 2010, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse after a fall and a short illness. His death was sad and unexpected.Orvis was born January 22, 1925, to Alf and Elvena (Kirking) Holte in Vernon County. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific as a torpedoman on a destroyer escort. As a member of the Naval Reserve, he also servied during the Korean War and was present at the atomic test on Bikini Atoll. Orv was an avid carpenter all his working life and served many years in the Cashton VFW, including everything from building maintenance to Past Commander. Orv lived on the home farm most of his life and one of his big pleasures was taking all his young nieces and nephews for tractor rides around the farm.Orvis is survived by four brothers, Archie (Margaret) of Rockford, IL; Trenton (Velma) of Sun Prairie, WI, Harlan (Karen) of Rockford, IL, Alan (Betty) of Janesville, WI; three sisters, Elaine Kirby, of Westby, Alverda Bethauser, of Cashton, and Joyce Langman, of Battle Creek, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers-in-law; three nephews; one niece; and two great-nieces. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, August 5, 2010, at the Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Main, in Westby. Pastor Dennis Hallemeier will officiate with burial to follow in Coon Prairie. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 12 Noon until the time of the service.The Vosseteig Funeral Home of Westby is serving the family.
