Peggy A. Matthes

Peggy Matthes, age 81 of Viola, died Wednesday, February 20, 2008. Peggy Alice Matthes, age 81 of Viroqua and formerly of Viola, died Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at the Vernon Manor Nursing Home in Viroqua. She was born to Clarence and Bessie (Bender) Turner on May 5, 1926. On January 4, 1944 she married Ray Ed Matthes. They farmed in Richland County most of their lives. After her husband passed away, Peggy moved to Viola at which time she baby-sat for two boys whose parents, Rick and Zell Spry, owned the store in Viola. Peggy then moved to Elroy where she worked at the nursing home. After all her children moved away, she moved in with her son Allan and family, in Viola, where she lived for 15 years. Peggy then moved to Viroqua into the Broadway Apartments. She enjoyed playing Yatzee with her sister Darlene (who lived a few doors down) until her sister passed away. Peggy was able to stay there for 8 years before residing at Vernon Manor Nursing Home where she passed. Peggys wish was to be with family during her last days and hours. Peggy enjoyed watching her soap operas, puzzles, books and putting together puzzles. At the nursing home she was known as the "Puzzle Queen".Peggy is survived by her children: Edward R. Matthes, his wife Linda, Allan R. Matthes, Roxanne F. (Hirschfield) Hayes, husband Randy; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild.She was preceded in death by her parents; Clarence and Bessie (Bender) Turner; husband: Ray Matthes; one son: Leslie Matthes; three sisters: Marie Marshall, Avis Spangler, and Darlene Christianson.Our mother and grandmother will be missed greatly. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Viola United Methodist Church. Pastor Karen Bankes will officiate with burial in the Viola Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday at the church one hour prior to the service. The Vosseteig Funeral Homes Henthorn Memorial Center of Viola is serving the family.
