Westby, Wis. Sgt. Phillip L. Compton, age 22 of Westby died early Monday morning, December 18, 2006 near Winona, MN as the result of an automobile accident. Sgt. Compton was born in Viroqua on May 3, 1984 to Andy and Linda (Kolbo) Compton. He graduated from Westby High School on May 25, 2002 where he had received the LaCrosse Tribunes Extra Effort Award. Following graduation, he enlisted in the US Marines and served three tours of duty in Iraq. He was honorably discharged on July 8, 2006. Phillip was proud of his service to his country, as was the whole community. Phillip is survived by his mother, Linda (Martin) Short of Westby; his father Andy D. Compton of Barre Mills; four brothers: Alex B. (Amanda) Compton, Patrick A. Compton, Bobby D. (Tonya) Compton, and Damian P. Schmidt. He is further survived by three nieces: Alyssa A. Compton, Hailey E. Compton, and Savannah M. Compton; and a close friend, Aaron. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, great-grandparents, and an uncle, Harvey Kolbo. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at the Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Hwy 14 in Westby with Pastor Gary Daines officiating. Burial, with military rites by the Syverson-Funk American Legion Post 155 and Westby VFW, will be in the Our Saviors Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday after 12:00 noon at the Vosseteig Funeral Home in Westby.
