Phyllis J. Iverson, 90, of Soldiers Grove, WI peacefully passed away on January 7, 2024.
Phyllis was born on April 9, 1933, in Turtle Lake, WI to Merlin and Mabel Tess. After graduating from high school, she embarked on a life journey that included a marriage to David Iverson on March 25, 1951. Together, they raised their four sons: John, Bill, Jim, and Dick, on the Iverson family farm.
Phyllis pursued her passion for education, attending teachers’ college and beginning her teaching career at two country schools. Furthering her education, she studied advanced teaching at UW-La Crosse and Winona State. Over her 36-year career, Phyllis dedicated herself to teaching at Gays Mills, Soldiers Grove, and North Crawford schools. Her love for education extended to courses in English and Math, along with a role as a guidance counselor.
Away from the classroom, Phyllis worked on the family farm, milking cows and raising tobacco. She also loved watching her sons at sporting events. In her retirement, she kept books for the family businesses and loved to travel. She took regular trips with her mother Mabel and Aunt Irene every summer, as well as traveling with her husband to warm and sunny destinations.
Phyllis was also actively involved in her community over the years, offering her time to teach Sunday school, serving on Our Savior’s Lutheran Church Council, and participating in the library board. She also volunteered at the local food pantry and later as a hospice volunteer. You could also find Phyllis spending time with friends and family at the Old Oak Inn, playing cards, reading a good book on her davenport swing, or enjoying four-wheeler rides around the farm with her sons.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, David; her parents, Merlin and Mabel; her brother, Ken; aunt, Irene; brothers-in-law: Edward, Donald, Roger, Bill, and Larry; and sisters-in-law: Carolyn Lillian, Harriet, Helen, and Diane.
She is survived by her sons: John (Kathie), Bill (Mary), Jim (Louise), and Dick (Teri); her grandchildren: Jeremy (Lindsay), Jeni (Mitch), Melissa (Nick), and Zack; her great-grandchildren: Wyatt, Ella, Molly, Max, and Ava; and her sister-in-law, Janice.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made to the Gays Mills Food Pantry or Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Soldiers Grove. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the church. Phyllis will be laid to rest at Forest Hill Cemetery.
