Rachel Leah Stout, age 49, of Viroqua, peacefully passed away while asleep in the comfort of her own bed on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. She quietly left this world like she quietly entered it on February 20, 1977, born to Kathleen L. Billington in Richland Center, Wisconsin.
Rachel’s early childhood was spent playing in the desert with her four siblings outside of Reno, Nevada. At age 10, Rachel and her family moved to Viola, Wisconsin to be near extended family. Rachel met the love of her life, Ronald Stout, when she was a sophomore in high school. She graduated from Kickapoo High School in 1995. Later that year, she married Ronald on October 28, 1995. In 1998, they welcomed their daughter, Autumn, into the world, followed by their son, Logan, in 2001.
After starting a family, Rachel worked at Pizza Hut, Central Express, and Fort McCoy until she was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and artery disease in 2008. She then enrolled at WWTC to become a Paralegal but was unable to complete her studies because she ended up in a coma. Rachel’s fighting spirit survived the coma, but her organs were severely damaged. This would lead to many major surgeries over the next 18 years. Rachel had two aortobifemoral bypass surgeries which eventually resulted in her left leg being amputated in 2020. Rachel had end stage kidney failure, so she began dialysis three times a week in 2021. She had unwavering determination and quiet strength to remain here with her family through endless sicknesses, surgeries, and hospital stays.
Rachel loved being outside, basking in the sunlight, visiting with family and friends. She loved animals, flowers, twinkle lights, carousel horses, dragons, porcelain dolls, True Crime shows, horror genre shows, music, casinos, hummingbirds, wind chimes, bird feeders, Diet Mountain Dew, peanut butter balls, Sourdough Melts, and her husband’s cooking. She was helpful, kind, direct-spoken, and had an amazing laugh. Most of all, she cherished what time she had with her husband, children, grandchildren, siblings, parents, and extended family. Family meant everything to Rachel.
Rachel is survived by her husband of 31 years, Ronald Stout; her two children, Autumn Stout (Leymond) and Logan Stout (Bobby); her two grandchildren, Aspyn Niemeyer and Tayin Stout; her five siblings, Rebecca Kennedy-Thomas, Benjamin Billington, Kassandra Billington (Tumidajewicz), Douglas Billington (Kelly), and Joshua DeWitt (Christina); her aunt, Melody Mata; her in-laws, John and JoAnne Stout and Rena (Erickson) Schones; brothers-in-law, Richard Stout and Travis Erickson; sister-in-law, Jayme Woodhouse; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Rachel was preceded in death by her mother, Kathleen L. Billington and her father in-law, Bradley Erickson.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the Viroqua Eagles Club Reception Hall at 5:00 p.m.
