Ralph "Stub" Lomas

November 9, 1929 — January 1, 2022

Ralph “Stub” Lomas, 92, lifetime spent in the Gays Mills area joined the love of his life, Ruth, after a short illness on Saturday, January 1, 2022. He was born November 9, 1929, to Jule and Hazel (Wilkinson) Lomas on the family farm on the ridge outside of Soldiers Grove. He began his education at One Room School, Halls Branch School. It was a nice walk with his siblings up and over the hills; until it snowed while at school and they had to walk home in the snow bare foot. Maybe that was a part of the reason he was such a strong man we all loved and respected. He graduated from Gays Mills High School as Salutatorian of his class with his one other classmate as he would say with a grin. He spent many years working on the family farm on Zintz Road when he was home. He proudly served in the United States Air Force based in Alaska. Ralph was one of the 1st 38 military personnel to be stationed in Alaska. He was a member of the MCL, Luina division, Labor Union. He spent many years working on road construction throughout Wisconsin. Ralph was part of the crew working in PDC on Black Hawk Road. He was also a proud member of the Gays Mills American Legion McCormick Rose Post #308 for 36 years. While living in Madison, he met the love of his life, Ruth. They made the Gays Mills area their home. Ralph and Ruth married on March 1, 1983, in Boulder, CO. Once Ralph retired, he then began working for the Village of Gays Mills. He was so proud of the work he did making Gays Mills the beautiful place it is. Stub and Ruth were Apple Fest Ambassadors. He was very active in the Gays Mills Sportsman Club. Ralph especially enjoyed feeding the trout and pheasants, they were his babies. He taught his nieces, nephews, and granddaughters the joy of being outdoors along a creek bank or in the woods, waiting for that deer to appear. When he was no longer able to truck through those woods, he would be thrilled to have Caitlyn stop by with her deer. Ralph was so proud of her, he taught her well. Ralph is survived by his brothers: Kenny (Marlou) Lomas of Oregon and Matt (Myrna) Lomas of Gays Mills; his sister, Harriet (Gene) Heisz of Gays Mills; his special nieces, Goldie (Matt) Barlow and Janie Barlow of Gays Mills; his stepdaughters: Linda (John) Cottington of Madison, Susan (Floyd White) Isberner of Hays, Kansas, Beth Brown of Madison, and Cathy Stevenson of Gays Mills; and stepson, Don Isberner. He is further survived by his grandchildren: Caitlyn, Cheyenne, Cierra, Amy, Jay, Tammy, and Cory, and his great-grandchildren: Nina, Trey, and CJ; he was so proud to be their grandpa. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Ruth; his parents, Jule and Hazel (Wilkinson) Lomas; his brothers: Frank, Harold, Jake, Paul, Earl, and infant brother, James; his sisters-in-law: Hazel, Katie, and Eunice; his sisters: Beatrice (Butch) Rousch and Peggy Lomas; and his nephews, Gordy and Jim. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, January 8, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at Vosseteig Funeral Home in Gays Mills. A visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until time of service. Ralph will be laid to rest at Gays Mills Cemetery following the service.
