Richard H. Phillips, Sr.

Richard H. Phillips, Sr., age 86, of rural De Soto, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 18, 2025. He was born on January 6, 1939, to the late Virgil and Betty (Ender) Phillips. After graduating from De Soto High School, Richard enlisted into the United States Air Force in 1957, serving as an airman in the 2nd class until 1961. While stationed at the Ellsworth Air Force Base, Richard met the love of his life, Glenda Auwerter, and they married on September 28, 1958. After Richard finished his service, they moved back to Wisconsin where they raised their family in the rural De Soto area.

Richard was a journeyman pipefitter, working for Local 434 Plumbing and Steam Fitting in construction jobs. In his free time, he could be found on the Mississippi River fishing in the serene Wisconsin waters. Once retired, Richard could be found sitting on the deck with Glenda, enjoying time with his grandchildren, and watching his westerns. After Glenda’s passing, he continued their tradition of sitting on the porch, but he spent that time watching the birds and appreciating his beautiful and peaceful piece of nature. A hobby Richard had grown to love was creating jewelry from old coins.

Richard is survived by his children: Lori (Dyrke) Althof, Tracy (Gerald) Lawrence, Rick (Sally) Phillips, and Ritchie (Michelle) Phillips; his grandchildren: Matthew (Tracy) Loken, Angie (Lenord) Hatch, Ben Thoreson, Travis Thoreson, Becky Parker, Jen Parker, and Billy Parker; 14 great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Cleo Filler and MaryAnn Warner.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 64 years, Glenda; and his sister, Patsy Pickering.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
