Richard Hoveland, 83, of Viroqua, died Wednesday, November 12, 2014. Richard Hoveland, 83, of Viroqua, died Wednesday, November 12, 2014 after a short 2-month battle with cancer. Richard was born May 21, 1931 to Palmer and Amy (Lee) Hoveland. He attended Westby schools and in 1950 enlisted in the army and served 2 years in the Korean War. He was a lifetime member of the Viroqua VFW and American Legion. Richard worked 30 years for American Motors, retiring in 1990. In his retirement Richard enjoyed living in the village of Avalanche, and working part-time for many years at the Westby car wash. Richard is survived by his loving sister, Rita (Perry) Brown of La Crescent, MN; a niece, Susan (Joe) Hengel of La Crosse; a nephew, David Brown of La Crosse; and two great nephews, Joey and Jason Hengel. He is also survived by several cousins and his good friend, James Onshus. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Lee P. Hoveland in 1991. Funeral Services will be held at 11am on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at the Vosseteig Funeral Home in Westby. The Rev. Dr. Steven Fossum will officiate with burial to follow in the Coon Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday from 10 am till the time of service at 11. In lieu of flowers or plants, donations may be given to the American Cancer Society or a charity of the donors choice. The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers at the Mayo Cancer Center for their kindness and concern. The Vosseteig Funeral Home of Westby is serving the family.
