Richard P. Nelson

Richard P. Nelson, age 85, of Janesville, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on December 30th, 2024, at Rock Haven Nursing Home in Janesville, Wisconsin. He was born on July 25th, 1939, in Sugar Grove, Wisconsin, the son of Samuel and Elsie Mitchell Nelson.

Richard was a graduate of Readstown High School in 1958. He married Judy Howell on March 22nd, 1958, in Readstown, Wisconsin.

Richard started working at General Motors in Janesville, Wisconsin in 1959. In 1964, Richard and Judy built a home and raised their three children in Janesville, Wisconsin. He retired from General Motors in 1990. After retirement, Richard and Judy enjoyed spending the winters in Davenport, Florida. Richard enjoyed playing cards, woodworking, raising vegetable gardens, fishing, hunting, camping, and dancing. He loved to polka and square dance. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan. Richard had a great sense of humor, was quick to laugh, and made the best goofy faces.

Richard is survived by his wife of 66 years, Judy; his three children: DuWayne (Nancy) Nelson, Denise (Warren) Clobes, and Debra (Bob) Jones; his six grandchildren: Brandon (Jessica) Nelson, Casey Clobes, Jacob Nelson, Amanda (Jake) Kirchner, Erik (Elysa) Nelson, and Alexis (TJ) Olson; his ten great-grandchildren: Kylie, Robby, Haylee, Jep, Henry, Addison, Arkin, Mila, Elsie, and Nora. He is further survived by his sister Nancy Sly of Alabama, his sisters-in-law Janet Coleman and Joan Glass Huisman (Ken), his brother-in-law Rodney (Roxanne) Howell, and many nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Elsie Mitchell Nelson; his stepmother, Valeria Nelson; his siblings, Bernard, Rita, and Gordon; his father-in-law, Leslie Howell and mother-in-law, Arlene Howell (Jim Riley); and his stepbrother, Dan (Shirley) Davis.

Richard's family would like to thank Agrace Hospice Care (especially Morgan and Erin) and the staff at Rock Haven Nursing Home for the continued care and support they provided.

A Celebration of Richard’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home in Viroqua. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. A luncheon will follow the service. Richard will be laid to rest at the Readstown Cemetery.
