With heavy hearts, we announce the peaceful passing of Rita Johnson Luhman on September 14, 2026, at Vernon Memorial Hospital. Born on December 15, 1949, in the town of Viroqua, Wisconsin, Rita was a spitfire and a cherished soul who profoundly impacted everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Rita was the daughter of Byron and Effie Luthera Johnson. Throughout her life, she was a testament to strength and resilience, qualities that were evident to all who knew her. She carried a spirit of independence and determination, a free spirit with a remarkable sense of humor and a touch of sarcasm that could put anyone in their place with just a glance.

Rita's journey began in the halls of Kickapoo High School, where she graduated and started a family shortly after. She had many jobs but her work at the Bright Spot was more than just a job; it was a love for people that she pursued with unwavering dedication, even in the face of health challenges. Her co-workers and the people she encountered were more than just acquaintances, they were an extended family.

Rita's love for creatures great and small was evident in her affection for her pets, particularly Snickers, who will undoubtedly miss the snacks and treats lovingly bestowed upon her. Her days were filled with the simple joys of watching and feeding the birds and squirrels, and she cherished shopping trips with her beloved daughters.

Rita was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Natylee ; her sisters, Val, Jeannie, Karen, and Pat; her brother, Bruce; her husband Ron; and her dear friends Nolan and Andy. Her legacy, however, continues through her loving family: her three daughters—Penny, Amy, Erin, and special daughter, Robbin—who she loved dearly, and her nine grandchildren—Colton, Austine, Harmony, Draven, Ayden, Layne, Neyla, Harlow, and Gwennie—who brought her endless delight. She also leaves behind three great-grandchildren—Olivia, Arlo, and Brooks—a brother, Monte, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who adored her.

In remembrance of Rita, the family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who offered well wishes and supported her until the very end. Your kindness and presence have been invaluable during this time.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations be made in Rita's memory to a charity of your choice, reflecting her spirit of giving and love for all living things. A celebration of life will be held at the Bright Spot in DeSoto, WI at a later date.
