Robert "Bob" Nicholson

Robert “Bob” Nicholson, passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2026. Bob, as he was known to friends and family, grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, before his family eventually settled in Northern California.

During high school, Bob was an accomplished diver, earning medals in numerous competitions. After graduation, he attended college briefly before joining the United States Army, serving for nearly two years during the Vietnam era. Following his military service, Bob built a long career in retail and sales, where he formed lasting friendships and earned the respect of coworkers and supervisors alike. Bob spent the last 26 years of his life in Wisconsin and had lived in La Crosse since 2006. He enjoyed simple pleasures—a scotch, a cigarette, and good conversation. True to his strong will, he quit smoking cold turkey every winter until the weather warmed again. Those who knew him admired his work ethic, honesty, and unwavering sense of self. He knew what he liked, wasn’t shy about saying so, and was equally clear about what he didn’t.

He appreciated a rare steak or burger, and asparagus was the only vegetable that made the cut. Breakfast was his favorite meal: four eggs over easy, bacon, and a cup of coffee. Bob also loved dog-sitting for the family dogs, taking them to parks whenever the weather allowed.

Bob was important to many people and left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He worked hard for what he had and shared with others in need. His presence, his candor, and his companionship will be deeply missed.
