Roger Herman Berns, age 82, of rural Soldiers Grove, passed away Thursday, October 15, 2020, at his home from a farm accident. He was born May 4, 1938, in Garnavillo, IA to the late Eugene and Regina (Funke) Berns. Roger loved people and had friends at all stages of his life. He had many interesting stories to tell. He loved his farm and the orchard he planted with over 500 trees. He and his wife Kathy enjoyed farm life and raised many animals and pets. Roger served his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam and was stationed in Germany. He enjoyed his services as an army chef. Before coming to Soldiers Grove, Roger lived in Chicago where he had real estate interests and worked many jobs. Survivors include his wife Kathy; his son Dustan (Julie) Berns; his grandchildren: Connor, Jack and Claire; his siblings: Robert (Mary) Berns, Jean Ann (VerDean) Radloff, Sr. Geneva Berns O.S.F., Jerry (Ruth) Berns, Lois (her friend Steve) Berns and Bernice (her friend Terry) Berns; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends. Roger was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Arlene Kehrli. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Philips Parish appreciated. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 23, 2020, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Gays Mills. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Roger will be laid to rest at St. Philips Catholic Cemetery. Roger’s family would like to thank all of the local first responders who responded to give aid to Roger.
