Ruth J. Uglum

May 29, 1931 — March 28, 2024

Ruth Joanne Uglum went home to be with Jesus on March 28, 2024. Ruth was born to Henry and Nora Hansen on May 29, 1931, in De Soto, Wisconsin. She was baptized and confirmed in Freeman Lutheran Church, and in 1949, she graduated from Seneca High School. On June 9th, 1951, Ruth was married to Alec Uglum, her husband of over 50 years. Alec preceded her in death, passing away in September of 2003.

Alec and Ruth were blessed with four children who survive them: Paul Alec (Jeanine), James Leland, Richard David (Elizabeth C.), and Elizabeth Ann (Dwight) MacKinney.

Ruth was grandmother to twelve grandchildren: James (Jaime), Sarah (Frank) Castano, Jonathan (Claire), Robby Robertson, Aaron, Nicole Marie (Jordan Vincent) Cruz, Kirsten Noelle, Sarah Elizabeth, Kathryn, Susan (Garret) Witzenburg, Nathan, and Carissa. Ruth is also survived by her thirteen great-grandchildren: Mackenzie, Jonah, Gabriella, Hugo, Natalia, Mary, Locklyn, Jacob, Chase, Olivia, Barrett, Travis, and Alec.

Ruth was an excellent homemaker who also assisted her husband part time in Uglum Insurance and Real Estate. She later worked part time for Benson Insurance. She was a member of Gideons International, a ministry which was very near to her heart, and Ruth was also a member of Believer’s Fellowship Church in Viroqua, Wisconsin, where she had fond memories of being part of Christmas celebrations, telling the story of the birth of Christ.

Ruth enjoyed gardening, searching for the new sprouts as they came up in the spring, baking Norwegian treats, collecting, and trying new recipes, sewing colorful quilts, crocheting afghans, and doing cross stitch. For many years she hosted a Bible study in her home, inviting friends to read and study God’s Word with her. She also enjoyed Scrabble and other games which she played with friends and family when they visited the farm.

Some of the best memories of Ruth are of her worshiping at church, taking long country drives, especially near her childhood home in Mule Hollow, reminiscing with friends and relatives, baking and eating goodies in the kitchen, and sharing happy times around campfires on cool summer evenings. Above all, Ruth leaves behind a legacy of faith in Jesus Christ, her loving Savior, whom she shared with those she knew.
