Selmer M. Jacobson

Selmer Maurice Jacobson age 89 passed away Friday December 7, 2012. He was born November 11, 1923, to Richard and Bertha (Olson) Jacobson of Viroqua. He was baptized and confirmed at Kickapoo United Lutheran Church in Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force November 18, 1942 and was discharged January 6, 1946. During that time he served in the 39th Bomb Group 61st Squad in the Southwest Pacific Island of Guam. On March 31, 1948 he was united in marriage to Phyllis Braaten at Franklin Lutheran Church, Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin. They were blessed with six children and raised them on the family farm. In 1985, he retired from farming and they moved to Viroqua where he managed the Severson Feed Store. Then in 1990 he started working at Nelson Agri Center in Viroqua and worked until 2009 at the age of 86. He truly enjoyed his co-workers and the customers he served as well. In May 2010 he was fortunate and honored to be apart of the Freedom Honor Flight to Washington D.C. He was a very active member of his church. He served on church council and was a youth leader for many years. He was also a long time 4H leader and a member of the Viroqua VFW Post 3032. Throughout his life he very much enjoyed to hunt and fish with his family and friends. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is survived by his wife Phyllis of 64 years, four sons Gary (Carolyn) Jacobson, Mark (Tania) Jacobson, Brian (Jeanne) Jacobson of Viroqua; Craig (Ruby) Jacobson of Westby. One daughter Nora (Ryan) Christianson of Viroqua. Nine grandchildren; Nicole Jacobson, Michelle (Michael) Patterson, Amy (Nick) McHugh, Darrick (Stephanie) Jacobson, Ryanna Christianson, Carly Christianson, Tia Jacobson, Jesse Jacobson and Colin Jacobson. Three great grandchildren; Lauren Patterson, Briell and Preston McHugh. Seven step grandchildren and fourteen step great grandchildren. A sister Alma Smith of Viroqua, brother Arnold (Esther) Jacobson of Tomah, Sisters-in-law, Geneva Jacobson and Bette Jacobson of Viroqua; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Debra, brothers Kermit and Paul Jacobson, sisters Selma Opsahl, Helen Dregne, brothers-in-law, Maynard Opsahl, Grant Smith and Alvin Dregne. Blessed be the memory of Selmer Jacobson. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Kickapoo United Lutheran Church, rural Soldiers Grove with Pastor Curtis Matz officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Kickapoo United Lutheran Church Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home, 123 W. Decker St (Hwy 56) in Viroqua. Friends may also call at the church on Tuesday after 10:00 a.m. The Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Home of Viroqua is serving the family.
