Sharon Lee Nelson

Sharon Lee Nelson, age 88, of Deerfield and formerly of La Farge, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2024, after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Born on January 28, 1936, to the late Cecil and Erma (Orsburn) Spry, Sharon was born at home above the cheese factory in La Farge, that is now the Organic Valley retail store.

A proud graduate of La Farge High School in 1953, Sharon’s academics helped her entrepreneurial spirit shine as she became the owner and operator of Nelson's Lakeland Motel in La Farge, where she provided a welcoming haven for travelers for several years. In 1953, Sharon and Vernon Nelson started their 40 years of marriage and remained loving friends until the end.

Sharon loved to travel, visiting Europe, Alaska, and Hawaii three times. When not traversing distant lands, she found joy in the simple pleasures of dining out with her family and engaged in spirited card games.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in La Farge and Marshall. Sharon also enjoyed being a member of the Marshall Bell Choir for years.

Sharon is survived by her children: Dawn Nelson, Kevin (Laura) Nelson, Dan (Brenda) Nelson, and Jim (Anna Volkova) Nelson; grandchildren: Heather (Shane) Siedschlag, Kyle (Courtney) Nelson, Kurtis (Krystle) Nelson, Josh (Laura) Nelson, Becky (Joe) Kiefer, Sarah Tallman (Chuck Krause), Zach (Amber) Nelson, Mercedes (Zach) Knokes, Sergey Volkov, Leonidas Volkov, and Magorita Volkova; 16 great-grandchildren; siblings, Dorothy Harris and Rick (Zell) Spry; and former husband and longtime friend, Vernon.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Kelly Harris.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Agrace Hospice of Fitchburg in Sharon’s memory.

Sharon’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Agrace Hospice Team.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, September 30, 2024, at the La Farge Free Methodist Church. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Sharon will be laid to rest at the Bear Creek Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the church. An additional celebration of life will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at The Rail House in Deerfield.
