Listen to Obituary

Shirley Ann Latham, age 90, of Viroqua, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at Vernon Manor. She was born on January 12, 1936, in Viroqua, to Harold and Mabel (Sordahl) Smith. She attended Viroqua Area Schools. On August 30, 1952, she married Lyall Latham and together they farmed for most of their married life. In 1977, they sold their dairy farm and built a house in a wooded area, but farming was still in their blood, and they continued to raise cattle and crops well into retirement. In 1996, Shirley and Lyall began wintering in Arizona where they eventually purchased a home. After Lyall passed away in 2001, Shirley continued to spend her winters in Arizona for several more years where she had many great times with new and old friends. Throughout her life, Shirley worked at J.C. Penny, Rural Insurance, and Viroqua Computers and Office Supply. Shirley also served as the Utica Township Clerk for 11 years. She was an active member of the community and was a charter member of the Viroqua Eagles Auxiliary and Park Fund Member of the VFW. She volunteered at Vernon Memorial Hospital from 2005 to 2019. She was a member of Southwest Prairie Lutheran Church for 64 years. When Lyall passed away, Shirley moved to Viroqua and joined Immanuel Lutheran Church where she had been confirmed in her youth.

Shirley will be remembered as a kind and loving person. Her family and her faith were of utmost importance to her. She loved watching her great grandchildren compete in sporting events and cherished videos and visits from the little ones. Shirley lived a full life and enjoyed many hobbies such as golf, dancing, and gardening. She liked playing bingo and cards and always seemed to leave the table a winner.

She is survived by her children, Arlen (Cindy) Latham of Soldiers Grove; Debra Latham of Waukesha; Sandra (Richard Bee) Latham of McFarland; Marsha (Dave) Tucker of Holmen; Dawn (Gordy) Woodard of Poynette; 7 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great- grandchild; 2 sisters, Janice Bolstad and Mary Venegas; several nieces and nephews; in-laws; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyall Latham; daughter, Linda Lynch; parents Harold and Mabel Smith; brothers, Fred, Raymond, and Eldon Smith; sister, Helen Miller; and other extended family members.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Viroqua. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. A reception will immediately follow at the church. Shirley will be laid to rest at Liberty Pole Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed at www.vossfh.com.
