V. Charles Melvin, age 93, passed away August 6, 2026, at his home near La Farge.
Charles was the 5th child born to Basil and Esther (Parr) Melvin on January 2, 1933. He was raised on their farm on Weister Creek and graduated from La Farge High School, where he met Marilyn Miller, the love of his life. Soon after graduation, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and was stationed in Horry County, South Carolina. Marilyn took a bus to see him, and the two were married on Easter Sunday, April 18, 1954. Charles and Marilyn were married for 62 years, separated by her death on September 16, 2016.
After proudly serving three years, Charles was honorably discharged. He first worked in Rockford, Illinois, and then for Art Nelson, as a mechanic and prepping vehicles for paint, and again later driving a dump truck. Charles and Marilyn purchased the Bert and Gladys Steinmetz farm on Morning Star Ridge in 1968. Thence, the poem "And God Made A Farmer" by Paul Harvey comes to mind.
Charles was quite the storyteller. He loved telling about his childhood and teen years on his parents' farm and reminiscing about life with Marilyn raising their own family. Everyone loved to hear about his life and was eager to always learn something from his precise memory, vast knowledge, and boundless wisdom, which he held dearly up to his death.
Left to mourn are his children, Deanna Millner, Mark Melvin, Lea Ann (Kelly) Shird, Sue Melvin (Paul Fay), Pat Melvin, Dave Melvin, also Mike (Dawn) Melvin and Connie Melvin whom he raised as his own; Grandchildren, Krystal (Zane) Whitehead, Jeremy (Jeanette) Millner, Amy (Cory) Cooper, Jeni Melvin, Emily (Herman) Bernstein, Bob Shird, Heather Griffiths, Jay (Mandi) Griffiths, Brandon Millner, Ashley (Melvin) Fish; 17 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren; also survived by brother and sisters-in-law, Duane (Kathie) Miller; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn (Miller); and parents Basil and Esther Melvin; father and mother-in-law George and Gladys Miller; siblings La Vern (Naomi Pelton) Melvin, Lola Mae (Leland) Pelton, Eugene (Geraldine Mashak) Melvin, Lorraine (Daniel) Erickson, Orland (Verla Dabel) Melvin; son-in-law Hank Millner, brother and sister-in-law Eldon (Beverly Steinmetz) Miller; and great-great grandson Brennon Nemec.
