Verlyn Ames, 89, died Tuesday, October 10, 2017. Verlyn Fay Ames was born to Chester and Wilma (Erickson) Ames on December 24, 1927 in Freeman Township, Crawford County, Wisconsin. Verlyn passed away at Gundersen Healthcare in La Crosse, Wisconsin on October 10, 2017. Verlyn graduated from Viroqua High School in 1946. He was an outstanding athlete participating in football, boxing and baseball. He also played baseball for the Retreat Baseball Team. Verlyn later married Doris M. Lewison on January 22, 1951. Verlyn had a great faith in God and held strong Christian beliefs. He valued and loved his family, friends and neighbors. Verlyn is survived by one son, Dan Ames and daughter-in-law, Barb Ames; three grandchildren: Sarah Stuber, David Stuber and Benjamin Palmer; also three great-grandchildren: Riley Stuber, Nate Palmer and Alexis Palmer. He is also survived by two sisters: Lorna (Jack) Pitt and Cindy Ames; and one brother, Loren (Maggie) Ames; and many nieces and nephews. Verlyn also had many great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Ames; his parents; two sons: Brent Ames and Jeffrey Ames; his sister, Phyllis Kutschenreuter; and brother-in-law, Bob Kutschenreuter. Verlyn, along with his beloved wife, Doris owned and operated Ames Feed Store and his family farm in Retreat, WI for over 40 years. Previous to that he owned and operated Verlyn Ames Trucking. Verlyn was an outdoorsman, horseman, cattleman, businessman, and farmer. He liked hunting, fishing, foraging, the woods, the Mississippi River, Lake Superior, bowling, card playing, woodworking, dancing, music, reading, and much more. Verlyn and Doris supported many charitable organizations. Verlyn was a member of many civic organizations and served as a Board Member or President of several. He was kind, considerate, thoughtful, generous, honest and strong yet gentle. He also had a very good but sometimes dry sense of humor. He was intelligent and a deep thinker. He especially loved horses, dogs and children. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 14, 2017 at the Retreat United Methodist Church, rural DeSoto. Pastor Jim Aniol will officiate with burial to follow in the Walnut Mound Cemetery. Friends may call on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. On line condolences may be offered at www.vossFH.com Vosseteig-Larson Funeral Homes, serving the Viroqua and DeSoto area, is assisting the family.
