Verlyn Sagmoen, age 87 of Westby, died Monday, September 19, 2011. Verlyn Sagmoen, age 87 of Westby, died on September 19, 2011 at Norseland Nursing Home in Westby. He was born on June 28, 1924 in Coon Valley to Albert and Josephine (Johnson) Sagmoen. He was baptized and confirmed at Vangs Church by Pastor Holum. He was drafted into the Army in April 1945 and served until December 1946. On February 14, 1953 he married Gertrude Thompson of Soldiers Grove, and was later divorced. They had four children, Richard, Vicky, Karen and Debra. They farmed for several years, and then moved to Milton Junction, WI where he worked for General Motors in Janesville for several years. They moved back to the Soldiers Grove area and then he moved into an apartment in Westby. He loved to play cards and watch baseball games. His favorite team was the St. Louis Cardinals. He is survived by two daughters: Vicky Turben and Karen (Kevin) Welsh of Boscobel; many grand- children and great-grand-children; two sisters Jolene Deaver of Watertown and Verna (Joseph) Bakkum of Janesville; many nieces and nephews and his good friend Diane Wang. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son Richard; his daughter Debra Goldsmith; two grandchildren Todd Alexander and Nicky Alexander; his ex-wife Gertrude; four brothers Lloyd Joseph in infancy, Lloyd, Archie, and Otis; four sisters Alice Engh, Marion Iverson, Esther Cade, and Jeannette Hanson; and some nephews. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday September 22, 2011 at Vosseteig Funeral Home, Westby. Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday September 22, 2011 until the time of the service. Burial will be at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Soldiers Grove at a later date.
