Vern Walter Anderson, 70, passed away in the comfort of his home in Soldiers Grove, WI, on June 18, 2025. The youngest of four boys, he was born in Scottville, MI, on December 23, 1954, to Joe and Elvie (Young) Anderson. As a child, he picnicked on Lake Michigan, camped, participated in Boy Scouts, and learned to fish and hunt, his two favorite lifelong hobbies. After graduating from Mason County Central High School in 1973, he earned a Bachelor’s in Education from Central Michigan University.
In 1982, he relocated to Lancaster, WI, to raise his family, where he shared his love for the outdoors and taught his children to fish on Blackhawk Lake; played cards and fantasy football often with his fellow teachers; and was at every game, match, or meet for student athletes. Ultimately, he taught for 31 years at Lancaster Middle School while earning a Master's in Education from UW-Platteville.
Vern married Susan (Zube) Miller on December 27, 2003, and the two built their dream home together in rural Soldiers Grove. He loved camping with Sue and their family, tending to his garden, riding his motorcycle and moped (especially as part of the Back Roads Express Riders Club), and turkey and whitetail hunting. He also enjoyed woodworking, baking, and reading a great novel. Most of all, he cherished being a father of five to Scott, Brian, Jared, Sara, and Ashley, and a grandfather of ten.
With a patient ear and an open heart, he will be remembered by the many who loved him for his gentle, quiet grace, perfectly-timed wit, integrity, compassion, and kindness. He leaves a legacy of a life well-lived with purpose and humility.
He is survived by his wife of twenty-one years, Susan, and their children and families: Scott (Anne) Anderson, Ava and Alex of Waunakee, WI; Brian (Katrina) Anderson, Joey and Addison of Waunakee, WI; Jared (Monica) Miller, Tyler and Everett of Sparta, WI; Sara (Jon) Heaser, Will and Winnie of West Salem, WI; and Ashley (Jobert) Bermudo, Jonah and Libby of Readstown, WI. He also leaves behind his brothers, Max (Linda), Dean (Karen), and Bruce (Sandy) Anderson; brother-in-laws Richard (Shirley) Zube and Kelly (Paula) Zube; and sister-in-law April Zube along with cousins, many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Emory and Betty Zube; nephew, Bradley Anderson; nephew, Michael Zube; sister-in-law, Rosemary Anderson; sister-in-law, Kathy O’Neal; and brother-in-law, Bradley Zube.
