Verna Amundson

Verna Amundson, 89, of Westby, died Wednesday, March 18, 2015. Verna Mae Amundson, 89, of Viroqua passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at Norseland Nursing Home in Westby. Verna was born July 31, 1925 to Ingvald & Sophie (Volden) Tomten in Town of Coon, Vernon County. She was baptized and confirmed at Coon Prairie Lutheran Church in Westby. She attended Eide School and graduated from Westby High School in 1943. She married Morris Amundson on May 6, 1944. They farmed together on Reo Avenue from 1947 to 1981, milking cows and raising tobacco. In 1981, Verna and Morris retired from farming and built a new home on skyline Drive near Viroqua. Verna worked for several years at Norseland Nursing Home in the dietary department. She was a member of Westby Coon Prairie WELCA and Norseland Auxiliary. Verna took a tour of Norway in 1990 and enjoyed meeting relatives living there. Verna had a green thumb and loved to grow beautiful flowers, strawberries, and raspberries. She also enjoyed mowing her yard with her John Deere lawn mower. She made the best apple pies. Verna came from a musical family and learned to play the piano by ear at an early age. Most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Verna had been a resident of Norseland Nursing Home since May 2012. Many thanks to all of the employees of Norseland, who have taken wonderful care of Verna these past three years. Verna is survived by her daughter, Judean Everson of Bangor; son, Randy (Corrine) Amundson of Westby; son-in-law, Howard Knudtson of Green Bay; nine grandchildren: Kimberley (Michael) Biese, Brenda (Michael) Lichucki, Sarah (Rodney) Keyeski , Kristine (Zachary) Dunham, Arne (Katie) Everson, Rachel (Jeremy) Fink, Russell (Julie) Everson, Adrianna (Justin) Amundson, and Rachelle (Chris) Amundson; 25 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters-in-law: Inez Tomten, Thelma Amundson, and Betty Amundson; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Morris; daughter, Louise Knudtson; son-in-law, Robert Everson; her great-granddaughter, Lydia Everson; two sisters: Gladys (Harold) Larson and Pearl (Owen) Hanson; brother, Irvin Tomten; in-laws: Alex and Margaret Amundson, Julian and Myrtle Amundson, Melvin Amundson, and Lester Amundson. Blessed be our memory of Verna Mae Amundson. In lieu of plants or flowers, memorials may be given to the Norseland Auxiliary, Bethel Buttik, or the Coon Prairie Lutheran Church. In lieu of thank you notes a donation will be given to Bethel Buttik in memory of Verna. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church. Pastor Julie Wollman will officiate with burial to follow in the Coon Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 4-6 p.m. at the Vosseteig Funeral Home, 708 S. Main (Hwy14 S.) in Westby and also at the church on Tuesday one hour prior to the service.
