Virgil C. Hanson, 88, of Westby, died Monday, April 19, 2010. Virgil Clayton Hanson died on April 19, 2010 as a resident of Vernon Manor. He was born on April 27, 1921 to Carl and Lily (Brendum) Hanson in LaCrosse. He served his country during WWII as a Sergeant in the Army from 1942 to 1946 earning the American Theater Service and Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Ribbons, the Good Conduct Medal and four overseas service bars. He returned to work the family farm and enjoy the simple life and freedom he fought for. In 1950 he married Ann Marie Jothen. They farmed together until retiring to Westby in 1986. He was a life long member of Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church and a sixty-year member of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife Ann Marie, daughters Ingrid (Bob) Constalie and Sarah (Glenn) Schmocker, grandchildren Kyle & Kate Constalie and Sam Schmocker, sister Ardyce Berger and nephew Michael (Janet) Berger, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother in law Dick Berger, and sister Carol. There will be a visitation from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at Vosseteig Funeral Home 708 S. Hwy 14 in Westby and a funeral service at 11:00 on Thursday April 22 at Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church in Westby. Memorials are preferred. The family would like to thank Kris Brueggen, the Bland Clinic Providers and the amazing staff at Vernon Manor for their exceptional care. The Vosseteig Funeral Home of Westby is serving the family.
